World Oceans Day 2026 in Tenerife: More Than 50 Activities Planned Across the Island

Tenerife is marking World Oceans Day 2026 with one of its largest environmental programmes to date, as the Cabildo de Tenerife rolls out more than 50 activities focused on marine conservation, environmental education and community participation.

Running from 25 May to 27 June, the initiative brings together schools, volunteer groups, environmental organisations, local councils and residents in a month-long programme designed to raise awareness about the importance of protecting the island’s marine ecosystems.

Bringing Ocean Conservation to Communities

World Oceans Day is celebrated every year on 8 June, following a declaration by the United Nations to highlight the vital role oceans play in supporting life on Earth.

The Cabildo’s programme includes educational workshops, environmental awareness campaigns, scientific talks, beach clean-ups, marine conservation activities and volunteer initiatives taking place across Tenerife.

Activities will be held in municipalities including:

• Adeje

• Arona

• La Laguna

• El Rosario

• Fasnia

• Candelaria

• Puerto de la Cruz

• Arico

• Granadilla de Abona

• San Miguel de Abona

And many others.

More Than 1,000 Schoolchildren Taking Part

A major focus of the programme is environmental education.

More than 1,000 schoolchildren are expected to participate in workshops, educational activities and interactive sessions designed to help young people better understand Tenerife’s coastal and marine environments.

The aim is to encourage the next generation to become ambassadors for marine conservation and sustainability.

Island-Wide Coastal Volunteer Day

One of the highlights of the programme will take place on Sunday 21 June, when volunteer groups, environmental organisations, sports clubs and local councils come together for a large-scale coastal action day.

Activities will include:

• Beach clean-ups

• Environmental awareness campaigns

• Coastal walks and interpretation routes

• Educational activities

• Community volunteering projects

Locations involved include:

• El Médano

• Playa Jardín

• Punta del Hidalgo

• Almáciga

• Las Teresitas

• El Socorro

• Abades

• La Listada

• Charco del Viento

Activities for All Ages

Alongside the volunteer programme, residents and visitors will be able to take part in a wide variety of events throughout June, including:

• Marine litter and waste surveys

• Underwater clean-up initiatives

• Workshops on microplastics

• Scientific talks and presentations

• Guided environmental walks

• Activities at MUNA and other cultural venues

• Collaborative projects with the University of La Laguna

Many activities are free to attend and include the necessary materials, insurance and logistical support for participants.

Protecting One of Tenerife’s Greatest Assets

The programme aims to strengthen public awareness of the importance of Tenerife’s marine environment while encouraging practical action to help protect it.

With oceans playing a crucial role in climate regulation, biodiversity and food security, the initiative highlights how local action can contribute to wider environmental goals.

World Oceans Day serves as a reminder that protecting the sea is not only about conserving wildlife but also about safeguarding the future of island communities that depend on healthy marine ecosystems.
