Tejina Gets a New Family Space at Pico Bermejo

Pico Bermejo Square in Tejina has been given a bit of a refresh, with a revamped children’s playground and a new picnic area designed to give families and neighbours somewhere to sit, meet and spend time together.

The work has been carried out by La Laguna Council’s Municipal Services department, and the changes are based partly on feedback from local residents.

A better place for the playground

One of the main changes has been moving the playground to a new location behind the church.

This might sound like a fairly minor detail, but it should save a lot of hassle during Tejina’s May festivities.

Previously, the playground equipment had to be dismantled and reinstalled for the celebrations, which obviously isn’t ideal if you want it to last longer than a couple of summers.

The new play area includes an inclusive play structure with a slide tower, climbing areas, a walkway, tunnel, interactive panels and a swing with an adapted seat.

The flooring has also been renewed.

A new picnic area among the palm trees

Over in the palm garden opposite the church, the council has also created a small picnic area.

There are three picnic tables, bins and a rustic wooden barrier to protect the area close to the drop towards the ravine.

Nothing particularly revolutionary, perhaps, but sometimes a few benches and tables can make a public space far more usable.

The idea is to create somewhere that works for children, families and local residents rather than simply being a square people walk through on their way somewhere else.

According to the council, the project is part of a wider effort to make neighbourhood spaces more inclusive, practical and pleasant places to spend time.

And in a town like Tejina, where community life still plays a big part in daily life, having another place to sit down, share some food and catch up with the neighbours is probably no bad thing.
