Tenerife Promotes Sustainable Whale Watching at International Marine Forum in Puerto de la Cruz

Tenerife has once again put whale watching at the centre of its sustainability efforts.

During the MARLICE International Forum, held from 19 to 21 May in Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife Tourism presented its “Charter for Sustainability in Whale Watching”, a project designed to improve environmental practices while maintaining high-quality visitor experiences.

And considering Tenerife is one of the few places in the world where pilot whales can be seen year-round… it makes sense.

What is the Sustainability Charter?

The charter was originally launched in 2010 as a voluntary commitment for whale-watching companies operating on the island.

Its goals are fairly straightforward:

• Protect marine ecosystems
• Improve visitor experiences
• Support local communities
• Reduce environmental impact
• Promote responsible tourism practices

The initiative gained international attention in 2019, when it became a finalist in the UN Tourism Innovation in Public Policies and Governance Awards.

What Companies Commit To

Businesses joining the charter agree to follow sustainability measures including:

• Reducing environmental impacts from excursions
• Proper waste management
• Staff training
• Promoting good environmental practices to visitors
• Supporting marine conservation efforts

The programme currently includes whale-watching operators across Tenerife.

MARLICE: Tackling Marine Pollution

The presentation took place during MARLICE, one of the leading forums dedicated to marine litter and circular economy solutions.

The event brings together:

• Public administrations
• Scientists and researchers
• Businesses
• Environmental organisations
• Civil society groups

Topics covered include:

• Marine pollution
• Circular economy models
• Conservation
• Research and innovation
• Environmental policies

Because unfortunately… oceans collecting plastic isn’t exactly a small issue anymore.

Tenerife’s Position on Responsible Tourism

According to Dimple Melwani, CEO of Tenerife Tourism, the charter reflects Tenerife’s move towards a tourism model where:

“Marine conservation and quality visitor experiences move forward together.”

It also reinforces Tenerife’s reputation as one of Europe’s key destinations for responsible whale watching.

Not just boats chasing dolphins for photos.

Actual long-term conservation.

A slightly better outcome for everyone involved… especially the whales.
