Some anniversaries deserve more than just a celebration.
This summer, Tejina is marking the 100th anniversary of both the Teatro Unión Tejina and the San Sebastián Band, two institutions that have shaped the cultural life of the town for generations.
To commemorate the occasion, the village will host the 12th Tejina History and Heritage Conference, bringing together historians, archaeologists and researchers for a week of free public talks.
The event runs from 27 to 31 July at Teatro Unión Tejina, with all sessions beginning at 7.00pm.
Exploring Tejina’s Rich Past
The conference programme looks at many aspects of Tejina’s history, from its Guanche origins to its social, cultural and educational development.
Across four evenings, specialists will discuss archaeology, historical archives, healthcare, education, local traditions and the evolution of one of northeast Tenerife’s most distinctive communities.
Admission is free, subject to available seating.
Archaeology Opens the Programme
The opening session on Monday 27 July features renowned archaeologist Antonio Tejera Gaspar, Professor of Archaeology at the University of La Laguna and recipient of the Canary Islands Heritage Award.
His lecture will examine some of the most important archaeological sites in northeast Tenerife, offering insights into Guanche settlements, social organisation and religious practices before the arrival of Europeans.
The same evening, historian Judit Gutiérrez de Armas will explore historical records relating to Tejina preserved in the archives of the Count of Sietefuentes, shedding light on everyday life during the Early Modern period.
Healthcare, Education and Forgotten Stories
On Tuesday 28 July, the focus shifts to the history of healthcare in northeast Tenerife, followed by a presentation examining how Canary Islands history is taught in secondary schools.
The following evening includes the launch of the third volume of Documents for the History of Tegueste, Tejina, Bajamar, Punta del Hidalgo and Valle de Guerra, a publication bringing together previously unpublished historical records from the 18th century.
Another talk will explore the little-known connection between La Librea de Tejina and the historic Ultonia Regiment, adding another layer to the town’s fascinating past.
Celebrating a Century of Community
The conference concludes on Friday 31 July with presentations exploring everyday life in Tejina over the past century and the evolution of education within the village.
The final session will pay tribute to the 100-year history of both the San Sebastián Band and Teatro Unión Tejina, reflecting on their lasting contribution to the town’s cultural identity.
More Than a Festival Event
Held alongside the Fiestas in Honour of San Bartolomé, the conference adds another dimension to the summer celebrations by highlighting the people, stories and traditions that have helped shape Tejina.
For anyone with an interest in Tenerife’s local history, it’s an excellent opportunity to hear leading researchers share their knowledge while celebrating two institutions that remain at the heart of community life.
