Hundreds of residents gathered to honour the Tegueste-born footballer, who returned home after helping Spain lift the 2026 World Cup
Tegueste has given Pedro González López, known as Pedri, a hero’s welcome after the midfielder helped Spain win the 2026 World Cup.
Hundreds of residents, supporters and local representatives gathered for the official reception, organised by Tegueste Town Council and the Cabildo de Tenerife, in recognition of the footballer’s achievements and his continued connection with his hometown.
The ceremony was led by Tegueste mayor Juan Norberto Padilla and Cabildo president Rosa Dávila, with San Marcos Square filled with applause and cheers as the local community celebrated one of its most famous sporting figures.
A welcome from his hometown
Padilla highlighted Pedri’s journey from Tegueste to the top of world football, describing him as an example for young people and an exceptional ambassador for the municipality.
Dávila also praised the player’s talent, hard work and humility, while pointing to the strong connection he continues to maintain with Tenerife despite his international success.
One of the most memorable moments came when Pedri appeared on the balcony of the town hall to greet the crowd and thank residents for their support.
Before that, he had signed the Honour Book of Tegueste and received a symbolic gift representing Tenerife from the Cabildo president.
The tribute concluded with the municipality presenting Pedri with a commemorative sculpture. The footballer returned the gesture by giving signed shirts to both the Cabildo and Tegueste Town Hall.
From Tegueste to the top of football
Born in Tegueste on 25 November 2002, Pedri began playing at Club Deportivo Alirón Fútbol Base Tegueste before moving to UD Las Palmas.
His performances there eventually earned him a move to FC Barcelona in 2020, where he established himself as one of the club’s leading midfielders.
He has also been a member of the Spanish national team since 2021, representing the country at major international tournaments.
His individual honours include the Golden Boy and Kopa Trophy, awards recognising him among the outstanding young players in world football.
Now, with a World Cup winners’ medal added to the collection, Pedri has another reason to celebrate.
For Tegueste, though, the achievement is about more than another trophy. Pedri is one of their own, and Tuesday’s reception was the town’s chance to show just how much that still means.
