Popular South Tenerife beach reopens after two-day swimming ban

Anyone heading to El Médano this weekend will be pleased to know that Leocadio Machado Beach is once again open for swimming.

The beach was closed for two days after routine water quality tests found E. coli levels above the permitted limit. As a precaution, the council raised the red flag and temporarily banned swimming while further samples were taken.

The good news is that the latest tests have confirmed the water is now back within the required safety limits, so the restrictions have been lifted.

Granadilla de Abona Town Hall also confirmed that Leocadio Machado was the only beach affected. None of the other beaches in the municipality were impacted by the elevated readings.

Although it’s never ideal to see a beach closed in the middle of summer, this is exactly how the monitoring system is supposed to work. Regular testing picks up any issues, beaches are closed if necessary, and they’re only reopened once it’s safe to do so.

So, if you’ve got plans to head to El Médano over the next few days, you can once again enjoy one of South Tenerife’s most popular beaches.
