Tenerife’s reputation as a centre for research and innovation continues to grow.
The Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands (PLOCAN) has officially opened new offices at the Tenerife Science and Technology Park in Barranco Grande, strengthening collaboration between researchers, businesses and public institutions while expanding its work in marine science and the blue economy.
The move reflects the increasing amount of research and innovation now taking place on the island.
Bringing Marine Research Closer Together
PLOCAN is one of Spain’s Unique Scientific and Technical Infrastructures (ICTS), specialising in marine science, ocean observation and the testing of new maritime technologies.
Its new base in Tenerife will allow the organisation to expand its workforce, improve coordination with other research centres and develop more scientific and technical projects across the island.
Being located close to universities, technology companies and innovation centres is expected to encourage greater collaboration on future projects.
International Projects Already Underway
PLOCAN is currently involved in three international projects in Tenerife, with a combined budget of €6.3 million.
These include:
- Atlantic Whale Deal, which is developing technology to reduce collisions between ships and whales while improving understanding of the role whales play in capturing carbon.
- OceanSentinel, a real-time monitoring system for whales and recreational boats in the Teno-Rasca Marine Special Conservation Area, using artificial intelligence, coastal cameras and advanced sensors.
- UPWELLING, a European initiative designed to strengthen the Atlantic blue economy through innovation, skills development and international cooperation.
Together, the projects combine artificial intelligence, robotics, sensors and ocean monitoring to improve marine conservation while supporting sustainable economic growth.
Investing in the Blue Economy
The Tenerife Science and Technology Park considers the blue economy one of the island’s key strategic sectors.
By welcoming PLOCAN into its growing research community, the aim is to encourage knowledge sharing, support new high-value research projects and create stronger links between science, business and public organisations.
Positioning Tenerife as a Marine Innovation Leader
As interest in marine technology, renewable energy and ocean conservation continues to grow worldwide, Tenerife is increasingly positioning itself as an important centre for research in these fields.
The arrival of PLOCAN’s new offices is another step in that direction, reinforcing the island’s ambitions to become a recognised hub for marine science, technological innovation and the sustainable development of the blue economy.
