There’s a new place to try if you’re partial to something sweet. MYKA opened its latest Tenerife shop in the centre of Santa Cruz on 8 October, at Calle Bethencourt Alfonso, number 2.
The brand specialises in Greek frozen yoghurt, but this isn’t quite the usual frozen yoghurt offering. MYKA combines Greek yoghurt and goat’s milk kefir with the sort of toppings you’d normally expect to find in a good pastry shop.
Founded in 2023 by Natalia Morales and Javier Ezquerro, the idea came about during a trip to Greece. They spotted an opportunity to do something a little different with Greek frozen yoghurt, turning a fairly everyday product into something more creative.
Morales brings a strong pastry background to the business. She trained at Le Cordon Bleu in Mexico and also studied under renowned French pastry chef Pierre Hermé in Paris. That influence is reflected in the attention given to flavour, texture and presentation.
The recipe took months to develop, with the aim of getting the balance right between creaminess, acidity and freshness. Each MYKA shop has its own preparation area, where the yoghurt and many of the toppings are made fresh every day.
There’s plenty to choose from, including praline, chocolate crumble, baklava, homemade fruit compotes, Sicilian pistachio and orange blossom honey. You can put together your own combination, which is probably where the danger lies. One topping can easily turn into several.
MYKA expands across Tenerife
The new Santa Cruz shop is the brand’s second location in Tenerife. MYKA already has an outlet at Siam Mall and is looking at further opportunities across the Canary Islands.
Its expansion is based on a franchise model, with the company aiming to take the concept into new markets while keeping the same product standards and overall identity.
Seasonal flavours and new combinations are also part of the plan, so there should be something different to try from time to time.
It’s another addition to Santa Cruz’s growing choice of places to eat and snack, and a slightly different take on the usual frozen dessert.
