More Than 1,000 Women Take Part in La Laguna’s ‘Women at the Beach’ Programme

La Laguna’s popular ‘Women at the Beach’ programme has once again attracted more than 1,000 participants, reinforcing its position as one of the municipality’s most successful community wellbeing initiatives.

Organised by the Department of Social Welfare, the programme is designed to promote active ageing, encourage healthy lifestyles and create opportunities for social interaction among older women across the municipality.

Taking place at Las Teresitas Beach, the initiative combines physical exercise, aquatic activities, workshops and social gatherings in a supportive and enjoyable environment.

Promoting Active and Healthy Living

Participants take part in a range of supervised activities designed to improve physical fitness, mobility and overall wellbeing.

The programme includes:

✔ Guided gymnastics sessions
✔ Aquagym classes
✔ Educational workshops
✔ Outdoor social activities
✔ Free transport from participating neighbourhoods

Qualified instructors lead the sessions, helping participants stay active while developing new physical and cognitive skills.

Reaching Communities Across La Laguna

The initiative attracts women from more than 30 neighbourhoods and villages throughout La Laguna’s six districts.

During a recent session, attended by Mayor Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, 571 women from areas including San Matías, Las Mercedes, San Miguel de Geneto, El Ortigal, Punta del Hidalgo, Bajamar, La Cuesta and La Candelaria took part in activities at Las Teresitas.

Participants from Valle de Guerra, Centenero and Los Baldíos attend on alternate days as part of a separate group schedule.

More Than Exercise

While physical activity remains a key focus, the programme also provides important social and emotional benefits.

According to the council, many participants value the opportunity to:

✔ Build new friendships
✔ Strengthen social connections
✔ Combat loneliness and isolation
✔ Enjoy regular outings and shared experiences

Workshops and activities are often shaped by suggestions from the women themselves, helping the programme evolve according to their interests and needs.

Supporting Wellbeing in Later Life

Councillor for Social Welfare, María Cruz, highlighted the programme’s importance in promoting both physical and emotional health among older residents.

By bringing together women from different parts of the municipality, the initiative creates opportunities for connection, personal development and community participation, while encouraging healthy habits that contribute to a better quality of life.

As participation continues to grow, Women at the Beach remains a valued part of La Laguna’s commitment to active ageing and social wellbeing.
