EU Digital Wallet Could Replace Physical Driving Licences and ID Cards by 2027

For years we’ve been told that our phones are becoming our wallets.

Now they could become the place where we keep almost every important document as well.

The European Union is moving ahead with plans to introduce a European Digital Identity Wallet, allowing people to carry official documents securely on their mobile phones instead of relying on physical copies.

If everything stays on schedule, the new system should be available across EU member states by the end of 2026, with widespread use expected from 2027.

One App for Your Official Documents

The digital wallet is designed to bring together a wide range of official documents into a single secure platform recognised throughout the European Union.

Documents expected to be supported include:

  • National identity cards
  • Driving licences
  • Social Security information
  • Health cards and medical records
  • Educational certificates
  • Banking details and payment services
  • Travel documents and bookings

The aim is to make it easier to prove your identity, complete official procedures and access both public and private services without carrying a folder full of paperwork.

Easier Travel Across Europe

One of the biggest advantages is that the wallet will be recognised across all EU member states.

Whether opening a bank account, renting a vehicle, signing official documents or accessing government services, users should be able to verify their identity digitally using the same system wherever they are within the European Union.

The wallet will also allow users to create legally recognised electronic signatures.

What It Means for Tenerife Residents

People living in Tenerife are already familiar with digital documents through apps such as MiDGT, which stores digital driving licences, and MiDNI, which provides access to digital identity documents.

The new European Digital Identity Wallet won’t replace those services immediately, but it is expected to bring everything together into a single platform that works across the EU rather than only within Spain.

Physical Documents Won’t Disappear Overnight

Although the move towards digital identification is gathering pace, the transition will take time.

For now, drivers and residents should continue carrying whatever documents are currently required under Spanish law until the new system is officially introduced.

If the project goes as planned, however, by 2027 many people could find that their driving licence, ID card and other essential documents are all stored securely in one place…their phone.
