Best Place to Watch the 2026 Solar Eclipse in Tenerife Revealed

Tenerife will be one of the best places in the Canary Islands to witness the partial solar eclipse on 12 August 2026, with up to 77% of the Sun expected to be covered during one of the most spectacular astronomical events visible from the island in decades.

To help residents and visitors enjoy the event safely, the Elder Museum of Science and Technology has selected Guía de Isora as Tenerife’s official observation point, where astronomy experts will be on hand to explain the eclipse and distribute certified viewing glasses.

When Will the Eclipse Be Visible in Tenerife?

The eclipse will follow this timetable across Tenerife:

  • Starts: 7:06 pm
  • Maximum eclipse: 7:54 pm
  • Ends: 8:42 pm

Although mainland Spain will experience a total eclipse in some areas, Tenerife will enjoy a partial eclipse, with the Moon covering up to 77% of the Sun.

Tenerife’s Official Viewing Location

The official observation point for Tenerife will be:

📍 Avenida del Emigrante, Guía de Isora

Astronomy educators will be present from 6:30 pm until 9:30 pm, offering live explanations of the eclipse and handing out certified eclipse glasses while stocks last.

The location was chosen because its west-facing position offers excellent views of the sunset, providing ideal conditions for watching the eclipse.

You Can Watch It Almost Anywhere in Tenerife

While Guía de Isora is the official viewing site, the eclipse will be visible from almost anywhere on the island with a clear view towards the western horizon.

Good locations include:

  • Coastal promenades
  • Beaches
  • Viewpoints (miradores)
  • Rooftop terraces
  • Open public spaces

The key is choosing a location with an unobstructed view of the setting Sun.

Protect Your Eyes

Experts stress that you should never look directly at the Sun without certified eclipse glasses.

Ordinary sunglasses do not provide enough protection.

Recommendations include:

  • Use only certified solar eclipse glasses.
  • Look at the Sun for short intervals rather than continuously.
  • Ensure children are supervised at all times.
  • If you wear prescription glasses, place the eclipse glasses over them.

Thousands of certified eclipse glasses will be distributed at the official viewing point in Guía de Isora, while additional pairs will also be available through various organisations across the Canary Islands.

The 12 August 2026 solar eclipse is expected to be one of the biggest astronomical events visible from Tenerife for many years, making it a rare opportunity to experience a spectacular natural phenomenon from one of Europe’s best locations for stargazing.
