Iconic Canarian Dairy Brand Celgán Set for Comeback After New Owner Sparks Wave of Nostalgia

For many people in the Canary Islands, Celgán wasn’t just another dairy brand.

It was part of growing up.

From cinnamon drinking yoghurts to chocolate milkshakes, its products became a familiar sight in school lunches and family fridges for decades. Now, after disappearing from supermarket shelves, the much-loved Canarian name is preparing for a return.

A New Chapter for a Familiar Name

The historic brand was purchased in October 2025 by Tenerife businessman Agustín Adasat Rodríguez Domínguez, who acquired the rights from the insolvency administrators of JSP, Celgán’s former parent company.

His aim is simple: bring one of the Canary Islands’ best-known food brands back to life.

The first public sign of that revival came this week with the launch of the brand’s new Instagram account, @celgan.canarias.

Its opening message struck an emotional chord with followers:

“Celgán meant family. Celgán disappeared and left a void that was impossible to fill. It’s time to try again.”

More Than Just a Business

For the new owner, the project is also deeply personal.

His father, uncle and aunt all worked for Celgán, meaning the brand formed part of his own childhood long before he became its owner.

When he learned the rights were available, he decided to step in rather than see another well-known Canarian name disappear.

Social Media Filled with Childhood Memories

The announcement quickly prompted hundreds of nostalgic comments from people remembering the products they grew up with.

Among the favourites were:

  • Cinnamon drinking yoghurt
  • Coconut drinking yoghurt
  • Chocolate drinking yoghurt
  • Chocolate milkshakes

Several people recalled freezing the cinnamon yoghurt during the summer to make a refreshing icy treat, while others remembered enjoying Celgán desserts at school.

One former customer even reminisced about collecting bottle tops to claim one of the brand’s promotional T-shirts, which became a summer wardrobe favourite for many children.

Calls for Other Canarian Brands to Return

The excitement surrounding Celgán’s comeback has also sparked wider conversations about preserving local brands.

Many social media users hope its return could encourage the revival of other well-known Canarian names, including Millac and Los Compadres.

For many islanders, these companies represent more than just products. They are part of the Canary Islands’ shared identity and collective memory.

A Comeback Many Will Be Watching

There is still no official date for Celgán’s return to supermarket shelves, but judging by the reaction online, demand already exists.

Sometimes it’s not just the taste people miss.

It’s the memories that come with it.
