More Than a Market…Granadilla Adds Events, Food and Music

Markets in Tenerife are a funny one.

Most people drive past them…then say there’s nothing local going on.

Granadilla is trying to change that

Granadilla de Abona is putting a bit more effort into its Farmers’ Market this year.

They’ve launched a full programme running from March through to December under the slogan “Live your market”…which, to be fair, is a lot better than just opening the stalls and hoping for the best.

The idea is simple.

Get people to actually turn up…and give them a reason to stay.

Not just fruit and veg anymore

This isn’t just about buying tomatoes and heading off.

They’re adding workshops, cooking demos, tastings, and live music…basically turning it into more of a day out than a quick shop.

There’ll be things like:

Planting workshops
Traditional recipe sessions
Handmade crafts
Food events using local ingredients

So it leans more towards an experience than just a market.

A push towards families

A big part of it is aimed at kids.

Which makes sense…if they enjoy it, parents end up staying longer.

There’ll be workshops focused on agriculture, local traditions, and healthier eating…so it’s not just entertainment, there’s a bit of learning mixed in as well.

Whether the kids see it that way is another matter.

Backing local without making a speech about it

The council’s angle is about supporting local producers and keeping traditions alive.

Fair enough.

The primary sector here doesn’t exactly get centre stage most of the time, so anything that brings a bit of attention to it is probably a good thing.

What it comes down to is

Markets like this only work if people actually use them.

You can put on all the workshops and music you like…but if everyone still heads to the supermarket out of habit, it won’t make much difference.

That said, if you give people a reason to go, they usually do.
