Tenerife Expects to Mobilise More Than 2,000 Volunteers in Major Ocean Protection Campaign

Tenerife is set to mobilise more than 2,000 volunteers as part of the third edition of “Reconnect with the Tide 2026”, one of the island’s largest environmental awareness and coastal conservation campaigns.

Organised by the Cabildo de Tenerife through the Department of Natural Environment, Sustainability, Security and Emergencies, and coordinated by the Environmental Participation and Volunteering Office (OPVAM), the initiative marked its main event with simultaneous clean-up activities across 12 coastal locations around the island.

Hundreds Take Part in Main Clean-Up Event

Around 400 volunteers joined the central day of activities, helping to remove litter and plastics from beaches and coastal areas while taking part in educational programmes focused on marine conservation.

The campaign includes:

  • Coastal litter and plastic clean-ups
  • Citizen science activities examining the impact of microplastics
  • Environmental awareness workshops
  • The release of recovered sea turtles back into the wild

Five Weeks of Activities Across the Island

The campaign has expanded significantly compared with previous years. In 2025, around 1,000 participants took part in 33 activities across 26 coastal municipalities.

For 2026, organisers have extended the programme to run over five consecutive weeks, allowing more residents, schools, community groups and environmental organisations to participate in activities designed to protect Tenerife’s marine ecosystems.

Under the slogan “Reconnect with the Tide 2026”, the initiative aims to encourage greater public involvement in ocean conservation while highlighting the importance of reducing pollution and protecting coastal biodiversity for future generations.
