Tenerife Celebrates Three Sporting Greats at the “Best in History” Gala in Santa Cruz

Radio Club Tenerife are bringing back their “Best in History” Gala for a second year, and it’s one of those events that actually does what it says on the tin.

No gimmicks. Just recognising people who’ve done things properly.

It’s happening on the 23rd of March at the Auditorio de Tenerife in Santa Cruz, starting at 7pm.

The three being honoured

Aitor Sanz is first up. Over 400 appearances for CD Tenerife and still going. That tells you everything you need to know… consistency, loyalty, and not disappearing when things aren’t going your way.

Then there’s María José Pérez. A big name in women’s football on the island, former captain at Costa Adeje Egatesa and now playing in Murcia. She’s been a proper reference point for the women’s game here.

And Marcelinho Huertas… probably needs the least introduction. Liga Endesa MVP for the 2024/25 season, Olympic player with Brazil, and still pulling the strings at La Laguna Tenerife. Not bad at all.

What the event is about

This whole thing started last year around Radio Club Tenerife’s 90th anniversary, and it’s basically about recognising careers that have represented the island well.

Not just ability… but attitude, longevity, and setting an example.

The awards this year are being handed over by the President of the Canary Islands, the Cabildo, and the mayor of Santa Cruz… so yes, it’s a proper sit-up-straight type of evening, but without being over the top.

There’ll also be appearances from other well-known names in Tenerife and Spanish sport, some live and some on screen.

If you’re thinking of going

It’s open to the public, but you’ll need to pick up an invitation from their studios in Santa Cruz beforehand.

Or… do what most people will probably end up doing and watch it online. It’s being streamed on YouTube and their website, which saves you the drive, the parking, and the usual Santa Cruz runaround.

Final thought

Nice to see something that isn’t trying to sell you anything.

Just three careers being recognised properly… which, these days, is actually quite refreshing.
