When Pedri gets the chance to escape the spotlight of Barcelona and LaLiga, there’s one place he keeps coming back to.
Not a luxury resort.
Not a private island.
But the small Tenerife town of Tegueste, where the football star grew up and where his family still lives today.
Nestled in the northeast of Tenerife, Tegueste remains one of the island’s best-preserved rural communities and a place deeply connected to Canarian history.
A Village with Guanche Roots
Tegueste takes its name from one of the ancient Guanche kingdoms, or menceyatos, that existed before the Spanish conquest of Tenerife.
Today, the town’s historic centre is recognised as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC), a protected heritage designation it received in 1986.
The municipality is also home to some of Tenerife’s most important archaeological sites.
The Ancient Caves of Agua de Dios
On the northwestern edge of the town lies the Barranco de Agua de Dios, a protected archaeological area that preserves important traces of Tenerife’s indigenous past.
Among its most significant sites is the Cueva de los Cabezazos, one of several caves used by the Guanches as both homes and burial sites.
The area was officially declared a protected cultural site in 2006 and remains one of the most important archaeological locations on the island.
History Around Every Corner
Although Tegueste is a relatively small municipality, it still offers several historic landmarks worth visiting.
Highlights include:
⛪ Church of Nuestra Señora del Socorro, dating back to the 16th century
⛪ Parish Church of San Marcos, dedicated to the town’s patron saint
🏡 Casa de los Zamorano, a historic building showcasing the area’s rural and wine-producing traditions
Vineyards, Walking Trails and Anaga Views
Tegueste is also known for its wine production, with vineyards stretching across much of the surrounding countryside.
The municipality sits close to:
🌿 Anaga Rural Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve
🌋 Mesa de Tejina, a volcanic formation offering impressive views across the region
The area is popular with walkers, nature lovers and anyone looking to experience a quieter side of Tenerife away from the island’s busy tourist zones.
Pedri’s Tenerife Connection
Despite building his career at the highest level of world football and living in mainland Spain, Pedri’s connection to Tegueste remains strong.
His family continues to live in the town, and he regularly returns whenever his schedule allows.
For many locals, he’s still the boy from Tegueste who made it to the top.
And for visitors, the village offers something equally valuable: a glimpse of Tenerife’s history, traditions and rural character that has remained largely unchanged over the years.
