Long before he was playing for FC Barcelona and the Spanish national team, Pedri was helping out in a family restaurant in the heart of Tegueste.
For more than five decades, Tasca Fernando was much more than a place to eat. It was a meeting point for locals, a traditional Canarian restaurant and the family business where one of Spain’s brightest football stars spent much of his childhood.
Although the restaurant closed its doors in 2025, its place in the history of both Tegueste and Pedri’s life remains firmly intact.
A Traditional Canarian Tasca
Tasca Fernando had all the hallmarks of a classic Canarian restaurant.
Wooden beams, rustic décor and simple tables created a warm, welcoming atmosphere that never tried to follow the latest trends. It was the sort of place where regulars knew each other, visitors were treated like old friends and homemade food was always the main attraction.
The menu featured traditional favourites including Canarian stew (puchero), bienmesabe, stuffed onions, fresh fish and a selection of hearty meat dishes.
It was honest cooking, served without fuss.
A Wall Dedicated to Pedri
One of the restaurant’s most recognisable features was a wall filled with photographs celebrating Pedri’s football journey.
Pictures from his early playing days sat alongside images of his success with FC Barcelona and Spain, offering customers a glimpse into the remarkable rise of a local lad who never forgot where he came from.
Elsewhere, family photographs, newspaper cuttings and decades of memories covered the walls, giving the restaurant a personal touch that reflected its deep roots in the community.
Learning the Value of Hard Work
Pedri has spoken openly about helping in the family business while growing up, particularly during Tegueste’s local fiestas.
One of the jobs he remembers most was washing glasses and dishes during busy periods, gaining an early appreciation of the hard work involved in running a small family restaurant.
It’s a far cry from the packed stadiums he now plays in, but it’s an experience that helped shape the grounded personality many fans admire today.
The End of an Era
After almost 53 years serving the people of Tegueste, the family announced the closure of Tasca Fernando on 1 July 2025.
The news was met with sadness by generations of loyal customers who had celebrated family occasions, shared meals and created lasting memories within its walls.
In their farewell message, the family thanked everyone who had supported the business over the years, insisting that it wasn’t a final goodbye, but simply an “until we meet again.”
For Pedri, the restaurant will always be more than a family business. It’s where his story began, long before the trophies, the international matches and the global recognition.
