Santa Cruz de Tenerife will celebrate the Feast of the Virgin of Copacabana, Bolivia’s patron saint, this weekend with a colourful programme of music, dance and cultural traditions in the Ofra-Costa Sur district.
The event will take place in Plaza de San Antonio, bringing together the local Bolivian community and residents from across the municipality for a weekend dedicated to cultural exchange and community spirit.
Folklore, Music and Tradition
The celebrations begin on Friday, 7 August, at 6:00 pm, with performances by Bolivian folklore groups showcasing traditional dances, music and authentic regional costumes.
On Saturday, the programme continues with a religious procession through the streets surrounding Las Retamas and San Antonio, filling the neighbourhood with colour and festive atmosphere.
Celebrating a Strong Local Community
The event holds particular significance in Ofra-Costa Sur, home to one of Tenerife’s largest Bolivian communities.
The Las Retamas neighbourhood is also home to an image of the Virgin of Copacabana, making the annual celebration an important occasion for many local residents.
Santa Cruz Town Hall says the event is intended not only as a religious and cultural celebration but also as an opportunity to strengthen community ties and promote understanding between different cultures.
Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez highlighted the importance of recognising the contribution the Bolivian community has made to the social and cultural life of the city, describing the celebration as an open event where music, dance and tradition help bring people together.
Councillor Santiago Díaz, who represents the Ofra-Costa Sur district, added that the festival provides a welcoming space where neighbours of all backgrounds can come together to celebrate cultural diversity and community life.
