Planning a game of beach football in Santa Cruz de Tenerife? The answer is yes, you can… but only in the designated sports areas.
While many people believe ball games are banned on the city’s beaches, Santa Cruz’s Municipal Ordinance on Public Order and Good Governance allows sports such as football, provided they are played in the appropriate zones and do not disturb other beach users.
Designated Sports Areas
At Las Teresitas Beach, and other beaches managed by the city, dedicated areas have been set aside for beach sports including football and volleyball.
These spaces allow visitors to enjoy sporting activities while helping to keep the main bathing and relaxation areas safe and free from disruption.
Playing Outside the Designated Zones
Problems arise when football is played among sunbathers or close to families using the beach.
If a game interferes with other visitors, creates a safety risk, or ignores posted signs, Local Police can intervene. Officers will often ask players to move to a designated sports area or stop the activity altogether.
Children playing casually with a ball are generally treated with common sense, provided they are not causing inconvenience or danger to others.
Fines for Breaking the Rules
Anyone who continues playing outside the authorised areas after being warned, or whose actions disturb other beach users, could face fines ranging from €100 to €750, depending on the circumstances.
More serious penalties may apply if the activity causes injury, damages property, or if those involved refuse to comply with instructions from police officers.
The aim of the regulations is not to ban beach sports, but to ensure everyone can enjoy Santa Cruz’s beaches safely and respectfully.
