On the Road to the Day of the Cross: “The Cross of Vengeance” in Plaza del Cristo (Part II. By Julio Torres Santos

If Part I felt heavy…

This is where it really goes off the rails.

After the Execution

Antón returns from military service…

Opens a tavern on the road to Las Mercedes.

On paper, things settle down:

  • Business is good
  • He marries Maruca
  • Life looks… normal

At least for a while.

The Shift

Then the doubts creep in.

Old rumours… new suspicions…

And Antón starts to unravel.

  • Jealous
  • Distant
  • Then violent

What was a decent life turns into something much darker.

The Breaking Point

Maruca decides to leave… pregnant…

Planning to return to her parents.

And that’s where everything collapses.

That same night…

Antón kills her.

And the child.

Full Circle

He’s caught, tried… and sentenced.

And then comes the part that ties the whole story together.

In the firing squad:

Juan… the corporal’s son.

The same boy raised on the idea of revenge.

This time, it’s his shot.

And just like that…

The cycle closes.

What Was Left Behind

A small chapel was built on the spot…

Where both men met the same end.

Still there today, beside the Plaza del Cristo.

Worth Knowing

This isn’t just a story about jealousy…

It’s about how things carry on.

Grudges, revenge… passed from one person to the next.

And somehow tied to a place most people walk past without thinking twice.
