New Public Housing in Güímar: 30 Homes on the Way

Most announcements about “new housing” in Tenerife sound great on paper.

Then you dig a bit deeper and realise it’s years away, tied up in paperwork, or nowhere near enough to make a real dent.

This one…is at least moving.

30 public homes planned for Güímar

The Cabildo has confirmed plans to build 30 public housing units in Güímar, specifically in the Las Cruces area.

They’ve already been out to the plot, which is usually a good sign. It means it’s not just talk sitting in an office somewhere.

The total budget is just over €5.4 million, funded between the Cabildo and ICAVI.

A step forward…after years of nothing

According to Lope Afonso, this is being positioned as a bit of a turning point for the area.

And to be fair, Güímar hasn’t exactly seen a wave of new public housing in recent years. So even 30 units feels like movement.

Still, let’s keep it realistic. Tenerife’s housing situation isn’t short by a few dozen homes…it’s short by thousands.

More planned…not just these 30

Alongside this development, there are plans for another 39 homes in the municipality through the Activa Suelo and Activa Vivienda schemes.

So on paper, you’re looking at close to 70 new properties in total.

Again…positive. But still a drop in the ocean when you look at demand across the island.

The usual political lines…with a bit of truth in there

Everyone involved is saying the right things.

Housing is a priority.
People are struggling.
This is about access and affordability.

All true, to be fair.

The interesting part will be whether these actually get built on time and allocated properly…because that’s usually where things start to wobble.

The reality

It’s a step in the right direction.

But if you’re hoping this suddenly fixes the housing situation in Tenerife…it won’t.

What it does show is that things are starting to move again, at least in certain areas.

And right now, even small progress is better than none.
