Granadilla’s 2026 Baile de Taifas Draws More Than 1,000 People

Granadilla de Abona’s historic centre came alive on 30 May as more than 1,000 people gathered for the 24th Baile de Taifas, one of the most popular events in the municipality’s annual celebrations.

Held in the square surrounding the Church of San Antonio de Padua, the traditional Canarian folk gathering once again proved to be a highlight of the Fiestas Mayores 2026, with music, dancing, local food and a strong sense of community filling the streets well into the night.

A Celebration of Canarian Tradition

The event brought together residents and visitors for an evening dedicated to preserving and celebrating local customs.

Councillor for Culture and Festivities, Carlos Abismael Díaz Barreto, praised the exceptional turnout and highlighted the growing interest among younger generations.

He noted that the strong participation demonstrates the deep-rooted connection many people have with the municipality’s traditions and emphasised the importance of passing these customs on to future generations.

Folk Music and Traditional Dance

The evening featured performances from several well-known local folk groups:

✔ Aires de Abona
✔ Viñático
✔ Alisios del Sur
✔ Guaydil del Sur
✔ Sentir Sureño
✔ La Parranda

Traditional dance performances were provided by members of the Asociación Cultural Raíces de Abona, who showcased a variety of Canarian folk dances throughout the evening.

Respecting Traditional Dress

One of the most noticeable aspects of this year’s event was the high number of attendees wearing traditional Canarian clothing.

Organisers highlighted the increasing awareness among participants regarding appropriate traditional attire, helping preserve the authenticity and cultural identity of the celebration.

Festivities Continued Into the Early Hours

Following the main folk performances, the celebrations continued with a lively open-air dance featuring:

✔ Fernandito “El Fernan”
✔ Nueva Ilusión
✔ Aparranda2

The festive atmosphere lasted until the early hours of the morning, bringing another successful edition of the Baile de Taifas to a close.

More Celebrations Still to Come

Granadilla de Abona’s Fiestas Mayores 2026 continue until 14 June, with a packed programme of cultural, religious and community events in honour of San Antonio de Padua and Nuestra Señora del Rosario.
