Drago Santa Cruz de Tenerife will host a public discussion on precarious living conditions, rising costs and social challenges facing residents in the capital later this month.
The event, titled “Salaries that Don’t Arrive”, will take place on 26 June at 7:00pm at the Asociación Cultural Equipo PARA on Calle La Marina, with free entry for the public.
Focus on Housing, Poverty and Social Exclusion
The discussion will explore issues affecting many residents across Tenerife, including housing insecurity, low wages, homelessness and access to social care services.
According to figures cited by organisers, Tenerife recorded approximately 2,800 homeless people in 2025, with more than a third located in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, making it the municipality with the highest number of homeless residents on the island.
Guest Speakers
The panel will bring together representatives from several organisations working directly with vulnerable groups, including:
- Ricardo Iglesias, Secretary General of Cáritas Tenerife
- María del Carmen Lázaro, Director of Proyecto Hombre Canarias
- Miriam Henríquez, Unión de Técnicas Sociosanitarias de Canarias SAD Canarias
- Verónica González, President of the Works Council for the Home Care Service (SAD) in Santa Cruz
- Ehedey Fernández, President of the Tanemmirt Residents’ Association
The discussion will be moderated by Aitor Montelongo, spokesperson for Drago Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
Putting People at the Centre
Speaking ahead of the event, Montelongo said the aim is to focus on the everyday realities faced by many residents.
“We will talk about the difficulties of making ends meet, rising food prices, people struggling to pay rent and those who have no home at all,” he explained.
He added that the debate aims to focus on “real people who live day by day” and highlight challenges that continue to affect a growing number of families across the island.
The event forms part of Drago Canarias’ ongoing efforts to encourage public discussion around social inequality, housing and quality of life in Tenerife.
