Deporte Joven Returns… 3,500 Students Take Part Across Tenerife

After a six-year gap, Deporte Joven is back… and it’s starting properly.

Around 3,500 secondary school students across Tenerife will take part in the programme, which focuses on getting teenagers moving again and building healthier habits.

How It Started

The first day kicked off on 7th April, yesterday, with a mix of activities across the island.

  • Hiking on the Ruta de los Guardianes Centenarios (Tacoronte)
  • Water sports for students in Los Cristianos
  • Ultimate frisbee sessions in the north

So not just one sport… a bit of variety from the start.

What’s Included This Year

In total, there’ll be 98 sports days running through to 18th June.

Alongside the usual activities like athletics and frisbee, they’ve added:

  • Hiking
  • Nautical activities

Which makes it a bit more interesting than the standard school sports setup.

A Competitive Edge

Some of the activities, like frisbee and water sports, will include inter-school competitions, leading to semi-finals and island finals.

Top teams get trophies… and a decent bonus:

Free tickets to Siam Park for both students and teachers…not a bad incentive.

The Bigger Idea

The goal here is pretty straightforward.

Teenagers tend to drop off when it comes to sport compared to younger kids… and this is an attempt to close that gap.

It’s backed by a budget of around €400,000, with support from multiple councils and the University of La Laguna.

The Reality

It’s not groundbreaking… but it doesn’t need to be.

Get students outside, moving, and doing something different for a day… that’s already a step in the right direction.
