Efforts to increase the supply of affordable housing in Tenerife have taken another step forward with the awarding of a contract to build 47 new public housing units in Granadilla de Abona.
The project has been awarded to construction company SATOCAN for a total value of €9.6 million, following approval by the Tenerife Cabildo’s Governing Council.
Addressing Tenerife’s Housing Challenge
The development forms part of a wider strategy aimed at increasing access to affordable housing across the island, particularly at a time when rental availability remains one of the main concerns for residents.
According to the Cabildo, the project reflects its commitment to taking a more active role in developing housing solutions.
Vice President Lope Afonso highlighted the importance of accelerating housing initiatives that help address the growing difficulties many people face when trying to access affordable rental accommodation.
He also noted that Tenerife has become the first Cabildo in the Canary Islands to directly promote public housing developments through its agreement with the Canarian Housing Institute (ICAVI).
Part of a Wider Housing Investment Plan
The 47 homes in Granadilla form part of a broader programme being delivered through a framework agreement between the Cabildo and ICAVI.
The partnership involves a total investment of €59 million, with the Cabildo contributing €25 million towards the initiative.
Housing Councillor Sonia Hernández emphasised that close cooperation between institutions and technical teams has been key to moving major housing developments forward during 2026.
She described the Granadilla project as one of several important schemes now progressing under the agreement.
Expanding Public Housing Supply
The new development is intended to increase the availability of public housing on the island and provide additional options for residents struggling to access the private rental market.
As housing affordability continues to be a major issue across Tenerife, projects such as this are expected to play an important role in expanding the supply of publicly supported homes in key municipalities.
The construction of the 47 homes represents another significant step in Tenerife’s ongoing efforts to improve housing access and deliver long-term solutions for local residents.
