If there’s one thing that sums up a traditional summer evening in Tenerife, it’s fresh sardines, live music and a village square full of people enjoying themselves.
That’s exactly what’s happening in Candelaria on 16th July, when the town celebrates its annual Virgen del Carmen Sardine Festival.
The event brings together local traditions, religious celebrations and a lively street party that’s always popular with both residents and visitors.
An evening of tradition and music
The celebrations begin at 7pm with a Mass at the Parish Church of Santa Ana, honouring the Virgen del Carmen, the patron saint of fishermen.
Afterwards, the action moves to Plaza de Los Pescadores, where the festivities continue with a traditional sardinada and an evening of live entertainment.
Taking to the stage will be:
- Banda Cepillao
- Orquesta Columbia
- DJ Chris G
So, whether you fancy a dance or simply want to enjoy the atmosphere, there’ll be plenty going on throughout the evening.
Sardines by the sea
No sardinada would be complete without the food.
Visitors can enjoy freshly grilled sardines by purchasing tickets on the night, with plates costing €2 and drinks €1 each. Payment can be made by cash or card.
It’s simple, traditional food, but somehow it always tastes better when you’re eating it outdoors with the sea just a few metres away.
A summer tradition in Candelaria
The Virgen del Carmen celebrations have long been an important part of life in Candelaria, reflecting the town’s close connection with the sea and its fishing heritage.
If you’re looking for an authentic local fiesta rather than a tourist attraction, this is exactly the sort of event that’s worth experiencing.
Good food, live music and a relaxed Canarian atmosphere…it’s not a bad way to spend a summer evening in Tenerife.
