Tenerife Confirms Two Official Viewing Locations for the 12 August Solar Eclipse

Tenerife has confirmed two official viewing locations for the partial solar eclipse on 12 August, giving residents and visitors the opportunity to safely enjoy one of the year’s most anticipated astronomical events.

The designated observation points will be in Puerto de la Cruz in the north of the island and Playa San Juan, in the municipality of Guía de Isora, in the south-west.

Two Official Viewing Points

The locations were agreed during a planning meeting chaired by Anselmo Pestana, the Spanish Government’s representative in the Canary Islands.

Authorities discussed the suitability of the sites, along with traffic management, safety measures, emergency services and operational planning ahead of what is expected to be a well-attended event.

The two locations have been selected to help spread visitors between the north and south-west of Tenerife and reduce congestion.

When Will the Eclipse Be Visible?

Although parts of mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands will experience a total solar eclipse, Tenerife will see a partial eclipse, with the Moon covering around 70% of the Sun.

In Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the eclipse is expected to:

  • Begin: Around 6:58 pm
  • Reach maximum coverage: Around 7:53 pm
  • Continue until sunset: Approximately 8:45 pm

To enjoy the best views, spectators should choose a location with a clear view towards the western horizon.

Watch Safely

Anyone planning to observe the eclipse should use certified solar viewing glasses.

Authorities remind the public that:

  • Ordinary sunglasses are not safe for viewing the Sun.
  • Homemade filters such as CDs, X-ray films or smoked glass should never be used.
  • Eclipse glasses should be free from scratches or damage.
  • Viewing should be limited to short intervals rather than prolonged staring.

Preparations Underway

Government officials will continue working alongside local councils, emergency services and security forces to ensure both official viewing locations operate safely and efficiently.

While the eclipse will be visible across Tenerife, the designated sites in Puerto de la Cruz and Playa San Juan are expected to become the island’s main gathering points for the event.
