Historic La Quinta Battery in Santa Úrsula to Be Restored as Museum

The historic La Quinta Battery in Santa Úrsula is set to undergo restoration after the Government of the Canary Islands approved a €118,000 grant to preserve the former military site and transform it into a museum and cultural attraction.

The project aims to restore one of Tenerife’s historic coastal defence structures while creating a new space dedicated to the island’s military and archaeological heritage.

Preserving an Important Piece of Tenerife’s History

The funding will be used to rehabilitate the long-neglected battery, conserving the existing structure while adapting it for public use.

Plans include the creation of a museum and interpretation centre where visitors will be able to learn about the site’s defensive role and its archaeological significance.

The project also forms part of wider efforts to protect and promote Tenerife’s cultural heritage.

A Former Coastal Defence Position

La Quinta Battery occupied a strategic position on Tenerife’s north coast and served as a coastal defence and lookout point during the Second World War, monitoring a significant stretch of coastline against the possibility of invasion.

Although the site has deteriorated after years of neglect, the restoration aims to preserve this important part of the island’s military history for future generations.

Boosting Cultural Tourism

According to the Directorate General of Culture and Cultural Heritage, the project will strengthen Santa Úrsula’s cultural offering while supporting archaeological research and public education.

The initiative also reflects ongoing cooperation between the Canary Islands Government and local councils to safeguard the archipelago’s historic sites and make them more accessible to residents and visitors.
