One of the first questions people ask when planning a trip to Tenerife is simple: how long is the flight?
The answer depends entirely on where you’re travelling from, but for many visitors it’s much closer than they expect.
From the UK: Around 4 to 4.5 Hours
Tenerife is one of the easiest winter-sun destinations for British travellers.
- London to Tenerife: approximately 4 hours 20 minutes
- Manchester to Tenerife: around 4 hours 30 minutes
- Edinburgh to Tenerife: roughly 4.5 hours
That makes it a comfortable flight for families, couples and anyone looking to swap grey skies for sunshine without spending half their holiday travelling.
From Europe: Between 2 and 5 Hours
Most major European cities are well connected to Tenerife.
Typical flight times include:
- Madrid: 2.5 hours
- Barcelona: 3.5 hours
- Lisbon: just over 2 hours
- Paris: around 4 hours
- Amsterdam: around 4.5 hours
- Berlin: around 5 hours
- Stockholm and Oslo: 5 hours
Despite being part of Spain, Tenerife feels very different from the mainland. Volcanic landscapes, year-round sunshine and a subtropical climate make it feel much further away than the flight time suggests.
From North America: Allow a Full Travel Day
There are currently no regular direct flights from North America to Tenerife, so a connection through Madrid, London or another European hub is usually required.
Estimated journey times:
- New York: 10 to 12 hours
- Toronto: 12 to 14 hours
- Los Angeles: 14 to 16 hours
Most travellers find the journey worthwhile, particularly for longer stays of 10 days or more.
From Australia and Asia
This is where the commitment starts.
Travellers from Australia should expect journey times of 20 hours or more, depending on connections and layovers.
It’s a long trip, but Tenerife’s climate, scenery and relatively affordable prices continue to attract visitors from the other side of the world.
From South Africa
South African travellers can usually reach Tenerife in around 8 to 10 hours with a connection, often via Madrid or Amsterdam.
Which Tenerife Airport?
Tenerife has two airports:
- Tenerife South (TFS) – handles the vast majority of international and holiday flights.
- Tenerife North (TFN) – mainly serves domestic and inter-island routes, along with some European services.
For most international visitors, Tenerife South will be your arrival airport.
Why Flight Times Vary
Flight durations can change due to weather conditions, particularly the Atlantic jet stream.
This is why flights from the UK to Tenerife are often slightly quicker than the return journey. It’s completely normal for the flight home to take 20 to 30 minutes longer.
Quick Flight Time Guide
| Departure Region | Approximate Flight Time |
|---|---|
| UK & Ireland | 4 – 4.5 hours |
| Spain Mainland | 2.5 – 3.5 hours |
| Western Europe | 3 – 5 hours |
| Scandinavia | 4.5 – 5 hours |
| North America | 10 – 14 hours |
| South Africa | 8 – 10 hours |
| Australia | 20+ hours |
The Bottom Line
Tenerife gets the balance right. It’s far enough away to feel like a proper escape, but close enough that most European visitors can be sitting by the pool just a few hours after leaving home.
Four hours from London for year-round sunshine isn’t a bad trade-off at all. In fact, many people spend longer travelling across the UK and end up somewhere with considerably worse weather.
