Granadilla Launches Beekeeping Training Programme to Support Rural Entrepreneurship

The municipality of Granadilla de Abona is launching a new initiative aimed at encouraging rural entrepreneurship and attracting a new generation of beekeepers.

The Town Hall’s Primary Sector Department has announced the creation of the “Experiential Classroom for Beekeeping Entrepreneurship”, a pilot project designed to provide practical training and business support for people interested in entering the beekeeping sector.

Training with Real-World Experience

The programme will run from 29 June to 16 July at the municipal farm of Las Crucitas, with sessions taking place from 4:30pm to 9:00pm.

Participants will receive a combination of:

🐝 Theoretical training

🐝 Practical work in an active apiary

🐝 Personalised mentoring

🐝 Business development guidance

The course is structured around three training modules covering the entire beekeeping production cycle, from the basics of bee biology and hive management to honey production, marketing and tourism opportunities linked to the sector.

Topics include:

🍯 Bee biology and behaviour

🍯 Hive installation and management

🍯 Bee health and reproduction

🍯 Honey production

🍯 Marketing and sales

🍯 Beekeeping tourism and gastronomy experiences

Supporting New Rural Businesses

Councillor for the Primary Sector, José Sanabria, explained that the aim is not simply to teach beekeeping techniques but to help participants develop viable business projects.

“We want this experience to generate economic opportunities, support rural communities and open up new lines of activity within the primary sector of Granadilla de Abona,” he said.

Each participant will also receive one-to-one support in developing their own business plan and assessing the viability of future projects.

A Sector with Growing Potential

The council highlights that beekeeping offers significant economic, environmental and educational benefits. Bees play a vital role in pollination and agricultural productivity, while honey production and related activities can provide valuable income opportunities in rural areas.

Officials hope the pilot programme will eventually evolve into a permanent training and reference centre for beekeeping across Tenerife.
