Tenerife is marking Día de Canarias with an extensive programme of around 150 events taking place across the island, bringing together municipalities, cultural associations, schools and community groups in a celebration of Canarian identity, traditions and heritage.
From traditional dress and folk music to gastronomy, artisan markets and indigenous sports, towns and villages across Tenerife are hosting activities designed to showcase the customs that continue to define island life.
A Celebration of Canarian Culture
Throughout the weekend, residents and visitors can enjoy a wide variety of events, including:
• Baile de Magos celebrations
• Folk music and dance performances
• Traditional sports exhibitions
• Artisan fairs
• Local food and wine tastings
• Book presentations and cultural talks
• Children’s activities and workshops
Traditional Canarian attire, local wines, gofio, folklore and community gatherings will once again take centre stage across the island.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife
The capital hosts one of the most extensive programmes of activities.
Highlights include:
• A Modo Canario food and wine event on Calle La Noria
• Traditional music performances in Plaza de La Candelaria
• The long-running Concurso de Comidas Típicas
• Canarian wrestling and traditional sports exhibitions
• Folklore performances throughout the city centre
• An evening concert by José Vélez
The celebrations conclude with a low-noise fireworks display.
La Laguna
La Laguna’s programme extends across numerous neighbourhoods and villages, including Tejina, Bajamar, Guamasa and the historic centre.
Activities include:
• Traditional wrestling demonstrations
• Juego del Palo exhibitions
• Canarian food tastings
• Traditional music concerts
• Children’s workshops and games
Events will continue throughout the day and into the evening.
Tegueste
The Farmers’ and Artisans’ Market will host:
• A traditional card game workshop
• Watercress stew tasting prepared by chef Diana Marcelino
• Local product giveaways
The programme also includes a book presentation and an evening concert in Plaza de San Marcos.
Los Realejos
As part of the municipality’s famous May festivities, Los Realejos will host:
• A livestock fair
• The 51st Festival of the Islands
• Traditional music performances representing all eight Canary Islands
Candelaria
The municipality’s programme includes:
• Traditional workshops for young people
• A Baile de Magos celebration
• A guided hiking route through Boca del Valle
• Tastings of traditional Canarian tapas
Puerto de la Cruz
The town celebrates with:
• The Mayo Canario Folk Festival
• Traditional wrestling exhibitions
• Displays of traditional clothing and wooden carts
