Santa Cruz de Tenerife witnessed an extraordinary display of emotion, faith and community spirit as Pope Leo XIV travelled through the city centre in the papamobile during the first papal visit to the Canary Islands.
Thousands of people lined the streets from the early hours of the morning, eager to catch a glimpse of the Pontiff before he celebrated Mass at the city’s waterfront.

A City Transformed
From dawn, the centre of Santa Cruz took on an unusual appearance.
Traffic disappeared from many of the main streets, replaced by crowds of residents, pilgrims and visitors who gathered hours in advance to secure a good viewing spot.
With flags, banners and decorations displayed throughout the city, Santa Cruz prepared to welcome a historic visitor while attracting international attention during a landmark moment for Tenerife and the Canary Islands.
Families arrived early with folding chairs, homemade breakfasts and plenty of patience, creating a festive atmosphere that built throughout the morning.

When the papamobile finally appeared, the waiting was quickly forgotten.

A Historic Stop in the Heart of Santa Cruz
One of the most symbolic moments of the day took place outside Santa Cruz City Hall, where Pope Leo XIV briefly stepped out of the papamobile to greet Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez and members of the municipal corporation.
During the meeting, the Mayor presented the Pontiff with several gifts representing the city and its history.
Among them was a specially created replica of the Foundational Cross of Santa Cruz, one of the municipality’s most important historical symbols.
The Pope also received a letter written by pupils from the Hispano Inglés School on behalf of children across the city, along with a handcrafted model of a cayuco, symbolising the migration routes that have become central to the Pope’s visit to the islands.

As the papamobile continued its journey and the crowds slowly dispersed, Santa Cruz began returning to normality.
Yet for many who witnessed the event, the day will remain etched in memory.
