Tenerife Symphony Orchestra Makes Historic Concertgebouw Debut in Amsterdam

The Tenerife Symphony Orchestra has travelled to Amsterdam for a landmark performance at the world-renowned Concertgebouw, marking its first appearance at one of Europe’s most prestigious concert halls.

The sold-out concert takes place this Thursday as part of the venue’s summer programme, where the orchestra shares the stage with some of the world’s leading ensembles.

Conducted by Pablo González, with internationally acclaimed guitarist Rafael Aguirre as soloist, the programme features works by Laura Vega, Joaquín Rodrigo, Manuel de Falla and Maurice Ravel.

First International Performance in 17 Years

The tour includes the orchestra’s musicians alongside its artistic and technical team, with support from Turismo de Tenerife, Fundación CajaCanarias and the Auditorio de Tenerife.

The Amsterdam concert marks the orchestra’s first international performance in 17 years, following its previous overseas tour to Beijing.

Lope Afonso, Vice President of the Tenerife Cabildo and Councillor for Tourism, described the performance as an important opportunity to showcase the island on one of Europe’s biggest cultural stages.

He said the concert helps associate Tenerife with excellence, adding that culture plays a vital role in promoting the island internationally.

Showcasing Tenerife Beyond Music

Ahead of the performance, around 230 invited guests will attend a reception in the Concertgebouw’s famous Mirror Hall, where they will be offered a selection of wines produced in Tenerife.

The initiative aims to promote the island’s gastronomy alongside its cultural achievements, highlighting Tenerife as a destination known for both artistic excellence and quality local products.

Performing at One of the World’s Great Concert Halls

The Concertgebouw is widely regarded as one of the finest concert venues in the world thanks to its exceptional acoustics and distinguished musical programme.

This summer’s schedule includes performances by internationally renowned ensembles such as the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Belgian National Orchestra, Royal Danish Orchestra, Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, Kansas City Symphony and the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester.

For the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra, joining this prestigious line-up represents another major step in its international development.

A Programme Inspired by Spain and the Canary Islands

Principal Guest Conductor Pablo González said the concert represents far more than a single performance.

He highlighted the significance of presenting Riojana by Canarian composer Laura Vega alongside works by Rodrigo, Falla and Ravel, creating a programme that explores colour, tradition and the close relationship between Spanish and French musical heritage.

González also praised soloist Rafael Aguirre, describing him as one of Spain’s leading guitarists, whose interpretation of Rodrigo’s iconic Concierto de Aranjuez brings elegance, virtuosity and expressive depth to the performance.

The programme concludes with selections from El sombrero de tres picos, marking the 150th anniversary of Manuel de Falla’s birth, before finishing with Ravel’s Boléro.

González said the concert demonstrates the orchestra’s artistic maturity, combining tradition with contemporary composition while showcasing Tenerife’s cultural talent on one of the world’s most respected stages.
