The Cabildo de Tenerife has approved a major investment to improve road safety, launching a new contract worth €9.9 million over the next three years to maintain and upgrade lighting on the island’s road network.
The contract, which could eventually be extended to five years with a total value of €21 million, will introduce a more proactive maintenance system, helping to detect faults more quickly while ensuring street lighting remains reliable across the island.
The project will cover all road lighting managed by the Cabildo and will be split into two operational zones, covering both the north and south of Tenerife.
Covering the Island’s Main Roads
The northern section includes major routes such as the TF-5 motorway, TF-11, TF-13 and TF-31, while the southern contract covers roads including the TF-1 and TF-2.
More than 100,000 drivers are expected to benefit from the improvements, with faster response times for repairs and a stronger focus on preventative maintenance rather than simply fixing problems after they occur.
LED Upgrades Planned
Cabildo President Rosa Dávila said road safety remains one of the administration’s highest priorities.
She explained that the new contract will deliver “a modern, safe and continuously monitored lighting system,” adding that investment in this type of infrastructure improves prevention, efficiency and overall quality of life.
Roads Councillor Dámaso Arteaga described the initiative as “a qualitative leap,” noting that the programme will also gradually replace older lighting with more energy-efficient LED technology, reducing energy consumption while improving visibility on Tenerife’s roads.
