The Tenzul El Rosario women’s badminton team has made history for Tenerife, winning bronze at the IX Iberdrola Women’s Club Cup and becoming the first club from the Canary Islands to compete in the national tournament and reach the podium.
The achievement was recognised by Tenerife Cabildo’s sports councillor, Yolanda Moliné, who met representatives of the club to congratulate them on their result.
The competition took place on 12 and 13 September at the Corredoria Arena in Oviedo, Asturias, bringing together 12 teams from nine Spanish autonomous communities.
A hard-fought route to the podium
The Tenerife team earned its place in the semi-finals after beating Club Bádminton Albacete and C.E.R. Vigo in the group stage, both by 3-2. They then overcame Soria-CS24 by the same score in the quarter-finals.
The squad included Sirine Ibrahim, Carla González, Sulimar Cabrera, Victoria Castro, Emma Ramos, Zoe de Olano and player-coach Tamara Rodríguez.
At the meeting with Moliné, the club was represented by under-15 player Zoe de Olano, Tamara Rodríguez, Nancy Coello and club president Roberto Cabrera.
The bronze medal is an important milestone for women’s badminton in Tenerife and reflects the team’s progress against some of the strongest club sides in Spain.
There’s another reason for the club to celebrate, too. Tenzul El Rosario is marking its 20th anniversary this year, having spent two decades promoting and developing badminton on the island.
A historic result, a national podium and a 20th birthday. Not a bad year for the club.
