Tenerife Athletics Club Celebrates 42 Years of Success

Few sports clubs manage to stay at the top for more than four decades.

That’s exactly what Club Escuela de Atletismo (CEA) Tenerife has achieved, and this week the club was officially recognised by the Cabildo de Tenerife for its 42 years of dedication to athletics and one of the most successful seasons in its history.

Founded in 1984, CEA Tenerife has become one of the island’s most respected athletics clubs, helping develop young athletes while continuing to compete at the highest levels of Spanish athletics.

A Proud Sporting History

CEA Tenerife is the oldest continuously active athletics club in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Today, the club is home to 192 athletes and boasts an impressive list of achievements, including:

  • 43 Canary Islands League titles
  • 39 consecutive years participating in the Canary Islands School Games
  • Previous spells competing in Spain’s Division of Honour, First Division and Second Division

The club also organises two of Tenerife’s best-known athletics events, the Women’s Race and the Race Walking Meeting, both established fixtures in the island’s sporting calendar.

Recognition from the Cabildo

The reception at the Cabildo was attended by around 50 athletes, club president Pedro Rodríguez Dorta, Tenerife Cabildo president Rosa Dávila, vice-president Lope Afonso and Sports Councillor Yolanda Moliné.

During the event, Rosa Dávila praised the club’s contribution to sport on the island, saying its greatest achievement goes far beyond medals by helping generations of young athletes develop values such as discipline, teamwork and perseverance.

Special recognition was also given to Pedro Rodríguez Dorta, whose decades of leadership have helped shape the club into one of the Canary Islands’ leading athletics organisations.

A Record-Breaking Season

The 2025-2026 season has been one of the club’s finest.

At the Spanish Masters Outdoor Championships in Madrid, a team of 19 athletes returned home with:

  • 18 national medals
  • One European record
  • Two Spanish records
  • Recognition as the best-performing Canarian club at the championships

The club also collected 50 medals at the Canary Islands Masters Championships.

Success continued across the younger age groups, with the women’s team finishing runners-up in the Canary Islands First Division League, several regional team titles and individual championship victories.

Among the standout performances were a bronze medal at the Spanish Under-16 Championships for Alejandro González Alonso, a European record for Jane Wickham in the F65 steeplechase, and a Spanish record for the club’s women’s F65 relay team.

More Than Medals

While the trophies continue to grow, CEA Tenerife’s greatest achievement may be the number of athletes it has inspired over the last 42 years.

From introducing children to athletics for the first time to producing competitors at national and international level, the club has played an important role in Tenerife’s sporting community.

After more than four decades, it shows no signs of slowing down.
