Every year La Orotava does this…
And every year it’s impressive.
But this one feels like it’s trying to say a bit more.
What’s Coming
The grand Corpus Christi tapestry is back on June 11…
Covering the Town Square like it always does.
Made, as usual, with volcanic sands from Teide.
This Year’s Theme
They’ve called it “Canarian Paradise”…
But it’s not just scenery.
What You’ll See
- Mount Teide in the background
- Native flora and fauna across the design
- The Pope, ahead of his visit the next day
- And something you don’t always see included…
The Red Cross and the migrant reality on the islands.
The Message Behind It
This isn’t just decorative.
There’s a clear nod to:
- Humanitarian work
- The situation at the islands’ shores
- The people dealing with it day to day
Subtle… but very much there.
The Scale of It
We’re talking:
- Around 20 metres high
- Built by hand
- Days of work under a marquee in the square
All gone within hours once the procession passes.
That’s part of the point.
The Tradition
This goes back to 1847…
And it’s now one of the main Corpus celebrations in Spain.
Recognised, organised… but still very local at its core.
Worth Knowing
It’s one of those things that photos don’t quite capture…
You need to stand there and actually look at it.
And this year, if you do…
You’ll notice it’s not just about beauty.
There’s a message running through it as well.
