Las Teresitas Beach could soon become a major hub for water sports after Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council unveiled plans to expand its sports facilities to include sailing and canoeing.
The proposal, which is currently undergoing a 20-day public consultation by the Canary Islands’ Directorate General for Coastal Affairs, would allow the council to modify its existing coastal permit and install seven storage containers near Access Point 10 at the eastern end of the beach.
New Facilities for Water Sports
The containers will be used to store equipment for a wide range of sporting activities, including:
- Sailing dinghies and safety equipment
- Canoes and paddles
- Beach volleyball and beach tennis equipment
- Swimming teaching aids
- Lifesaving and rescue training equipment
- Materials for children’s sports camps and community activities
The council says the new facilities will support both organised sports and free public use while also improving resources for lifeguard services.
A Long-Requested Project
Sports Councillor Alicia Cebrián said Santa Cruz has long lacked suitable public spaces for nautical sports, despite being surrounded by the sea.
The beach already features courts for beach volleyball and beach tennis, along with a floating water polo pitch introduced as part of the sports zone created in 2022. The latest expansion aims to build on that success by providing secure storage for equipment and creating a permanent base for new maritime activities.
The project also includes plans for a dedicated logistical area where lightweight boats can be prepared before entering the water.
Supported by Local Federations
The initiative has received backing from the Canary Islands Sailing Federation, the Canary Islands Canoeing Federation, and the Canary Islands Lifesaving Federation, all of which have highlighted the need for a permanent, publicly accessible launch point for water sports in Santa Cruz.
If approved, the expanded sports area is expected to be operational before the end of the year. The City Council has also revealed plans to install a calisthenics fitness area at Las Teresitas as part of its ongoing improvements to the beach.
