La Laguna gets a weekend of Canarian music at the Teatro Leal

If you like your music with a bit of history, identity and actual instruments rather than a backing track doing all the work, there’s a good double bill coming to the Teatro Leal this weekend.

On Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 September, Javi Hernández and José Manuel Ramos will take to the stage with Laguneando and Todo de mí, two very different shows rooted in Canarian music, folklore and songwriting.

Javi Hernández: Laguneando

First up is Javi Hernández, who performs Laguneando on Saturday 12 September at 20:30.

The show is described as an intimate musical journey through San Cristóbal de La Laguna, revisiting serenades and traditional songs connected with the city and its people.

It is very much a personal tribute to La Laguna, drawing on the streets, memories and characters that have helped shape the city’s identity.

Hernández brings plenty of experience to the stage, having links with the Agrupación Folclórica Real Hespérides, the Orquesta Sinfónica de Tenerife and the legendary Los Sabandeños.

Expect something fairly traditional, but presented in a polished and personal way.

José Manuel Ramos: Todo de mí

Then on Sunday 13 September at 19:30, José Manuel Ramos presents Todo de mí.

Ramos is one of the familiar names in Canarian popular music, with a career that includes Mestisay and the Parranda de Cantadores.

This show takes a more acoustic approach, combining melodic and singer-songwriter material with traditional Canarian music.

The arrangements give plenty of room to the voice, with instruments including the lute, guitar and timple providing the musical backdrop.

Ramos, who was born in Punta del Hidalgo, has built much of his career around bringing together traditional Canarian sounds and more contemporary songwriting. This show continues that approach.

A weekend for music with a bit of Tenerife in it

The two performances offer something slightly different, but both have the same underlying connection to the islands.

There’s the identity of La Laguna in Laguneando, followed by the broader musical traditions of the Canaries in Todo de mí.

For anyone who enjoys live music and wants something a little closer to home than another tribute act singing the greatest hits of somebody else, it should make for a decent weekend at the Teatro Leal.
