Juan XXIII Sports and Leisure Space in Ofra Moves Closer to Completion After 9 Months of Work

Anyone who knows Juan XXIII in Ofra will know this plot has sat waiting for something useful for years.

No park.

No proper community space.

Just one of those areas people kept saying would eventually become something.

Now… it finally is.

New Sports and Leisure Area Taking Shape in Ofra

📍 Juan XXIII neighbourhood — Santa Cruz de Tenerife

Work began in:

📅 August 2025

And after:

🚧 9 months of construction

The future recreational and sports space is progressing:

✔ On schedule
✔ As planned

According to Santa Cruz City Council.

What Will Be Included?

The project is designed as a community space combining sport, leisure and green areas.

Plans include:

⚽ Multi-sport and futsal court

💪 Calisthenics area

🛝 Children’s play zones

🌳 Tree-lined and landscaped spaces

🪑 Shaded seating and urban furniture

Basically giving residents the sort of public space many say the neighbourhood has lacked for years.

Investment of Almost €2.7 Million

The development carries a budget of:

💶 €2,699,402

And covers:

📐 Around 6,500 m²

On land provided by the Canary Islands Government.

The total construction period is:

🕒 15 months

Meaning completion is expected around:

📅 November 2026

With residents potentially able to use the area in roughly six months.

Residents Hope It Delivers

Locals interviewed said the area has long been underused.

Many described it as somewhere where people had:

❌ No proper park
❌ No field
❌ No public square

The feeling seems cautiously optimistic.

Although one comment probably summed it up best:

💬 “I won’t believe it until I see it.”

Fair enough really.

More Than Just a Park?

Residents also hope this investment helps bring attention to wider issues in the neighbourhood including:

🚗 Parking shortages

🏘 Housing rehabilitation

Because while the new space is welcome…many feel there’s still work to do.

Worth Knowing

Projects like this can easily look like just another public works update.

But for neighbours who’ve waited years to see something happen on the site…

It probably feels a bit bigger than that.
