Garachico Named Among Spain’s Most International Villages

Garachico has made it into the top 15 of Spain’s most international villages, taking 14th place in a ranking that looks at the proportion of overseas visitors each destination attracts.

According to figures compiled by the association Los Pueblos Más Bonitos de España, 36.5% of visitors to the Tenerife town come from outside Spain.

German visitors make up the largest international group, accounting for 24.2% of overseas visitors. French travellers come next, representing 16.2%.

It’s a decent result for Garachico, which continues to attract people looking for something a little different from the usual beach holiday.

Four Canary Islands villages in the top ten

The ranking covers 126 destinations, and the Canary Islands have done particularly well, with four villages appearing in the top ten.

Betancuria in Fuerteventura takes third place, with 62.1% of its visitors coming from abroad. German visitors account for 32.9%, followed by the British at 14.7%.

Teguise in Lanzarote is fifth, with 61% international visitors. The UK is its biggest overseas market, making up 47.6%, followed by Germany at 12.2%.

Tejeda in Gran Canaria comes eighth, with 43.6% foreign visitors, mainly from Germany and France.

Agulo in La Gomera is ninth, with 43.2%. Its main international markets are Germany and the UK.

Garachico completes the Canary Islands representation in the ranking at number 14.

How the figures were calculated

The results are based on anonymous, aggregated mobile phone data supplied by Telefónica Tech. The study covers the period from October 2025 to August 2026.

Importantly, the ranking doesn’t measure the total number of foreign tourists visiting each place. It looks at the percentage of overseas visitors compared with the overall number of people visiting.

That makes it easier to compare very different destinations, from small mountain villages to coastal towns.

Alcúdia in Mallorca took first place and was named Spain’s Most International Village for 2026. Other destinations featured include El Castell de Guadalest in Alicante, Fornalutx in Mallorca, Setenil de las Bodegas in Cádiz, Frigiliana in Málaga and Mogrovejo in Cantabria.

Francisco Mestre, president of the association, said international travellers are showing growing interest in smaller villages, particularly those offering genuine local character, heritage, food and a feel for everyday life.

Garachico certainly has plenty of that. And while 14th place might not sound like a huge achievement in some competitions, being one of Spain’s most internationally visited small towns is something worth celebrating.
