Arona launches checks on 6,886 holiday rentals under new control plan

Arona is starting a major review of its holiday rental properties, with 6,886 homes included in a new municipal inspection and control plan.

The Town Hall’s Urban Planning Department, headed by Javier Baute, has approved and published the Plan de Comprobación y Control Municipal (PCC), updated to reflect changes introduced by Canary Islands Law 7/2026.

The plan covers all 6,886 holiday rental properties included on the list supplied by the Canary Islands Government. The aim is to check the information held by the authorities, review the relevant paperwork and decide what action, if any, is needed in each case.

The checks will be carried out gradually, following the same procedure across the municipality. Some properties will also receive physical inspections, selected according to objective criteria. These will take account of the results of document checks, any signs of possible irregularities or risks, and the resources available to the department.

New application process for existing holiday rentals

Alongside the inspection plan, Urban Planning has introduced a new application form for owners seeking to consolidate their existing holiday rental activity.

The form will be available on the Town Hall website and is intended to make the process easier for properties that qualify under the new rules.

Consolidation is particularly relevant to holiday rentals that already had authorisation before the new legislation came into force. In certain circumstances, these properties can continue operating even if the current urban planning rules do not specifically provide for holiday rental use, provided they meet the legal conditions.

The arrangement is designed to protect certain existing situations while setting out the requirements and procedures owners must follow.

The council has been keen to clarify that the new control plan does not automatically grant permission to any property, change the requirements or decide in advance whether an individual rental is compliant.

Each property will be assessed separately, with the findings and any resulting action recorded in its own file.

For holiday rental owners in Arona, the message is fairly straightforward: the checks are coming, but being included on the list does not automatically mean there is a problem. Equally, existing authorisation does not remove the need to meet the relevant legal conditions.
