If you’ve spent any time on the beaches in Costa Adeje, you’ll know they’re generally well looked after.
Now that commitment has been recognised once again, with El Duque and Torviscas both awarded the prestigious Blue Flag for 2026.
The internationally recognised award is given to beaches that meet strict standards for water quality, environmental management, safety and accessibility.
Two of Adeje’s best-known beaches
Adeje applied for Blue Flag status for both El Duque and Torviscas, and both beaches successfully met the required criteria.
The flags were officially raised this week during a ceremony attended by local councillors and representatives from the companies responsible for managing the beaches.
It’s another sign that the municipality continues to invest in keeping its coastline clean, safe and welcoming for both residents and visitors.
More than just clean water
A Blue Flag isn’t awarded simply because the sea looks inviting.
Beaches have to meet a long list of environmental and safety requirements.
Both El Duque and Torviscas received excellent ratings for water quality, supported by regular testing throughout the year. They also scored highly for environmental management, recycling, public information, accessibility and lifeguard services.
Facilities such as defibrillators, accessible walkways and services for visitors with reduced mobility all form part of the assessment.
Safety remains a priority
Alongside maintaining high standards on its beaches, Adeje continues to run its “Know the Sea is Safety” campaign.
The initiative promotes water safety and sun awareness through schools, community groups, beach information points and social media, encouraging everyone to enjoy the coastline responsibly.
As local officials pointed out, the best form of safety is always prevention.
More Blue Flags for the Canary Islands
The awards also contribute to a strong year for the Canary Islands as a whole.
In 2026, the islands have been awarded 52 Blue Flags, five more than last year.
Spain continues to lead the world in the programme, receiving 794 Blue Flags in total, including 677 beaches, reinforcing its reputation for maintaining some of the highest-quality bathing areas anywhere in Europe.
For anyone visiting Costa Adeje this summer, it’s reassuring to know that two of its most popular beaches continue to meet some of the highest environmental and safety standards available.
