Adeje has once again been recognised as a Smart Tourism Destination (Destino Turístico Inteligente) after successfully renewing its certification for the 2026 to 2029 period.
The municipality has also improved its overall score, achieving 62.8%, up from 50.5% in 2023. That’s an increase of more than 12 points and places Adeje comfortably above the average for certified destinations across Spain.
A step forward for tourism
The certification is awarded by SEGITTUR, Spain’s state tourism innovation agency, and measures how destinations perform across five key areas: governance, innovation, technology, sustainability and accessibility.
According to Adeje’s Tourism Councillor, Patricia Paulsen Fölling, the result reflects years of work towards creating a tourism model that benefits both residents and visitors while remaining sustainable for the future.
It’s not just about attracting more tourists. It’s about managing tourism in a smarter way.
Technology leads the way
Technology was Adeje’s strongest area, scoring 67.4%, followed closely by governance at 66.5% and sustainability at 62.8%.
The report also praised the municipality’s commitment to innovation, transparency and digital public services, with top marks awarded in several of those categories.
Environmental protection and digital infrastructure also received particularly high scores.
There’s still room for improvement
No certification is perfect, and the assessment also highlighted areas where Adeje can improve over the next three years.
Accessibility remains one of the biggest challenges, alongside developing the local circular economy and improving tourism planning and marketing tools.
These areas will form part of the municipality’s action plan before the next assessment.
Looking ahead
Although renewing the certification is a positive result, Adeje isn’t stopping there.
The long-term goal is to achieve full Smart Tourism Destination status, which requires a score of 80% or higher.
For anyone who lives in the municipality or visits regularly, it’s another sign that Adeje is continuing to invest in improving the visitor experience while trying to balance the needs of tourism with everyday life for residents.
