Abubukaka celebrates 20 years of irreverent comedy with new show, book and exhibition

Two decades of sketches, eccentric characters and taking the mickey out of just about everything. Tenerife comedy company Abubukaka is turning 20, and it’s marking the occasion with a month of performances, a new book and an exhibition.

Founded in 2006, the company has built up a loyal following with its distinctive mix of humour and character-driven comedy. It now attracts around 25,000 audience members each season and has more than 200,000 followers across social media.

The celebrations begin at Teatro Leal in La Laguna, where the anniversary show, 20 años de Abubukaka, will be performed on 2, 3, 9 and 10 November.

Expect a trip back through the company’s history, with classic sketches and familiar characters making an appearance. The show will then head to Teatro Guiniguada in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, with performances on 12 and 13 November.

There’s more to come beyond the stage.

On 18 November, Fundación CajaCanarias will host the launch of No somos nadie pero ustedes tampoco (20 años de Abubukaka), a book by Paco Sánchez. Packed with anecdotes, photographs and key moments from the company’s history, it will be presented alongside a question-and-answer session and book signing, with members of the company and other contributors taking part.

The anniversary itself falls on 23 November, when an exhibition called 20 años opens at Abubukaka’s shop at 27 Calle Heraclio Sánchez in La Laguna. Visitors can look back at memorabilia from the group’s two decades, with a book signing and celebratory drinks also planned.

Abubukaka hasn’t been keeping its humour to the theatre, either. The company continues to work with Radio Club Tenerife and appears in the comedy segment of RTVC’s Friday programme, Hay que verlo.

Twenty years is a decent run for any comedy outfit. For Abubukaka, the anniversary is a chance to revisit the sketches and characters that made its name, while giving fans a few more reasons to get together and have a laugh.
