La Orotava launches Christmas toy appeal to make sure every child gets a present

Christmas is meant to be a happy time for children, but not every family can afford to make it special. La Orotava is hoping to change that with the return of its Apadrina una Ilusión campaign for 2026.

The scheme invites local residents, businesses and community groups to become Christmas sponsors by donating new toys. The aim is simple: make sure children from families struggling financially still have a present to open over Christmas.

The campaign is organised by the town council’s Social Welfare and Citizen Participation departments, led by Belén González and Delia Escobar.

Mayor Francisco Linares says the initiative is about more than handing out toys. It’s also a way for the community to show a bit of kindness and make sure children can enjoy Christmas regardless of their family’s financial circumstances.

Previous campaigns have received strong support, helping children and families across La Orotava feel remembered at a time of year when that can mean a great deal. The council is now encouraging residents, local associations and businesses to get involved again.

Want to take part?

Registration opens from 3 to 18 November 2026. Anyone interested in becoming a sponsor can sign up by email at apadrinaunailusion@villadelaorotava.org or by calling 616 097 575.

You’ll need to provide your name, email address and telephone number. Once registered, you’ll receive details of the gift you’ve been asked to prepare. The council says personal information will be treated confidentially.

Donated toys must be delivered between 1 and 11 December at the Usos Múltiples building in La Torrita.

It’s a straightforward way to help another family have a happier Christmas. And for a child who might otherwise go without, one thoughtful gift can make all the difference.
