There’s something rather appealing about eating traditional Canarian food in a house that’s been standing since 1829. That’s part of the charm at El Tinglao de Casa’Ma in Santa Úrsula, where local ingredients and familiar dishes get a few interesting twists.
Food bloggers @guachinchesmodernos recently paid a visit and came away with a long list of things they wanted to try on their next visit. Always a good sign.
The meal started with warm bread and curry butter, before moving on to one of their standout dishes, peas. They also tried black pig samosas served with mango sauce and smoky cheese, a combination that clearly hit the mark.
There’s plenty of homemade cooking on the menu, including a small serving of ropa vieja, a stuffed potato and bugango, a type of local courgette. The open kitchen also means you can see what’s going on behind the scenes, rather than having to take everything on trust.
For dessert, they finished with rice pudding made with goat’s milk and coconut yoghurt.
The food sounds promising, but the historic setting and friendly, family-style service were also part of the appeal. It’s the sort of place that seems to encourage you to take your time and order one more dish than you originally planned.
El Tinglao de Casa’Ma is at Carretera Provincial, 179, in Santa Úrsula, and currently has a Google rating of 4.8 stars.
