If you think an arepa is just a small snack, Área de Descanso in Güímar might change your mind. Tucked away in the industrial estate, this popular stop has added generously filled arepas to its menu, featuring slow-cooked pork and roasted pig’s trotters.
The place was already known for its hefty sandwiches, but food creators @guachinchesmodernos recently discovered the new additions and were clearly impressed.
“We already knew about their incredible sandwiches, but we’ve just discovered they also have large portions of slow-cooked pork and roast trotters,” they said.
Homemade fillings and plenty of pork
The pair tried both varieties, and neither seemed to be short on filling.
The pork arepa was packed with layers of tender meat, which the reviewers described as a very tasty pulled-pork-style filling. The roast trotter version also caught their attention for its size and generous helping.
Everything is homemade, according to the establishment, which has helped it build a loyal following among workers in the surrounding industrial estate.
As the food creators pointed out, when a place is busy with local workers, it’s usually a fairly good sign that the food is worth trying.
Arepas are available from 9am onwards, making them an option for a substantial breakfast or an early lunch.
Already planning for Christmas
There’s another reason to keep Área de Descanso in mind. The establishment is now taking orders for roast pig’s trotters for Christmas, so anyone planning a traditional festive meal can get their reservation in early.
You’ll find Área de Descanso at the Océano petrol station, Block 13, Plot 10, in the Polígono Industrial de Güímar.
Opening hours are:
- Monday to Friday: 6am to 3:30pm
- Saturday: Until 1:30pm
- Sunday: Closed
Güímar is on the south-east side of Tenerife.
If you’re working nearby, or simply fancy an arepa that doesn’t skimp on the filling, this looks like one to add to the list.
