Residents of La Verdellada gathered on Sunday, 2 August, to celebrate the completion of a new baldachin processional frame for the image of Our Lady of Lourdes, marking the end of a project that has been more than three years in the making.
The initiative has been funded through donations from local residents and businesses, with supporters continuing to contribute by purchasing fundraising bonds.
Three Years of Work
The project has been completed in three phases.
Last year saw the unveiling of the wooden framework, crafted from a selection of high-quality timbers. This year, the structure has been completed with decorative polychrome finishes, gold leaf detailing and four silver lamps.
The new baldachin was designed by Ibrahim Hernández, who drew inspiration from the baldachin in St Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican.
Inspired by Local Heritage
The processional frame features four Solomonic columns supporting a decorative canopy, with ornamental details inspired by the vineyards traditionally associated with La Verdellada.
According to the artist, the structure has been built using durable woods including Canary cedar, mulberry and sapelli.
The latest phase of the project also included decorative green and gold skirts for the summer celebrations, electrical lighting and the installation of the silver lamps.
A blue decorative skirt is planned for the 11 February celebrations, while the existing flower vases donated for the previous throne will continue to be used.
Community Support
Much of the project has been financed through contributions from local businesses and residents.
People wishing to support the initiative can still purchase fundraising bonds, priced at €30 and €50, from the Summer Terrace and the La Verdellada Citizen Centre.
