The village of Pedro Álvarez, in the municipality of Tegueste, is preparing for more than two weeks of celebrations as the annual Sacred Heart of Jesus Festival returns from 31 July to 15 August.
The programme combines religious traditions with live music, folklore, sporting events and family activities, bringing together residents and visitors for one of the area’s most important community celebrations.
Festival Begins with Folklore and a Street Parade
The festivities get underway on 31 July with Raíces Vivas, an event celebrating the end of the academic year for the Pedro Álvarez Folk Academy while also marking the 32nd anniversary of the village’s Cultural Centre.
Later that evening, the traditional opening parade will make its way through the streets, officially launching the festival.
The Fourth Paseo Romero Returns
One of the biggest dates in the programme is Saturday 1 August, when the village hosts the Fourth Paseo Romero in honour of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
The traditional pilgrimage celebrates Canarian customs and will be followed by a lively open-air dance featuring performances from:
- Orquesta Acapulco
- Grupo Atenia
- David Pérez
Music, Folklore and Community Events
The celebrations continue throughout the following week with activities for all ages.
Highlights include:
- A special outing and community lunch for senior residents

- The 16th Baile de Taifa, showcasing traditional Canarian folklore groups
These events reflect the festival’s mix of modern entertainment and long-standing traditions.
Religious Celebrations Take Centre Stage
The main religious events will be held over the weekend of 8 and 9 August.
On Saturday, the village will honour local residents Felipe Heliodoro Zamora Jorge and Carmen Rosa Díaz Hernández during the Con Nombre Propio recognition ceremony before the traditional procession of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, accompanied by the San Marcos Evangelista Band.
The evening will conclude with a fireworks display and a festive dance.
Sunday’s programme includes the solemn religious celebration, another procession through the village and an afternoon children’s festival featuring Show Burbujas and Clown Cañita.
Traditional Finale
The closing days of the festival on 14 and 15 August will feature plenty of family entertainment, including:
- Traditional Canarian games
- Children’s activities
- A parade with giant carnival figures
- The symbolic burning of El Haragán
- Live music and dancing
The celebrations will end on 15 August with the traditional football match between singles and married residents, a community barbecue, a card tournament and an afternoon dance.
Keeping Local Traditions Alive
The Sacred Heart Festival remains one of Tegueste’s best-loved annual celebrations, thanks to the work of local volunteers, community groups and residents who continue to preserve the traditions of Pedro Álvarez.
With more than two weeks of activities planned, the village is once again preparing to welcome visitors for a celebration that combines faith, culture and community spirit.
